What a branded fitness app actually needs
A fitness app is judged in the first session: the student opens it, finds today's workout, follows it without fumbling with the phone mid plank, and sees proof that something happened. Check every builder against this list.
- Guided workout player. per exercise countdown, rest timer, next move preview, follow along video, resume where you stopped.
- Progress that motivates. streaks tied to the program cadence, measurements, progress photos and milestones.
- Payments inside the flow. subscriptions, one-time purchases and trials, with the renewal price shown before the charge.
- Notifications that fire on behavior. a nudge when the first session is skipped, a streak warning, a renewal notice.
- Your brand everywhere. name, logo, colors, app icon and your own link.
PWA or native store app: how to choose
A progressive web app installs from a link on iOS and Android, gets a home screen icon, opens full screen and sends push notifications. No store review stands between you and your students: from quiz result to installed app takes about a minute.
Native store apps matter in three cases: you want to be found in App Store or Google Play search, your audience treats a store listing as a trust signal, or you need deep device integration. The price is time and cost: as of October 2026, general course platforms quote roughly 30 days to six weeks to launch a branded store app. On FitCoUp the PWA is included from Basic at 99 EUR a month; native apps come with Enterprise at 899 EUR.
- Cost. a PWA is included in the platform fee; store apps sit on a higher tier or an add-on.
- Speed. a PWA is live the moment you publish; a store app waits for review on every release.
- Discovery. only store apps appear in App Store and Google Play search.
- A sensible path. launch on the PWA, add store apps when revenue and audience justify them.
1. Prepare videos, the exercise library and branding
Start with the content inventory, because filming is the slowest part. A 4 week program with 12 sessions typically needs 12 session videos plus short demonstration clips for every exercise, ideally with an alternative for each move that commonly causes trouble. Film in one consistent setup so the app feels like one product.
Branding needs four things: a logo that works as a small app icon, two or three colors, a font and the display name on the home screen. FitCoUp checks color contrast automatically and lets you work on a draft theme before publishing. Video goes to private storage, or you link from YouTube, Vimeo or Bunny.
2. Build the program and set up the workout player
Create the program as weeks and modules, then add lessons. For each exercise set the timing, reps, sets and tempo, and attach the alternative. Group moves into circuits, intervals or rounds where needed. The mood and pain check-in after the session is optional, and that data is stored only with consent.
Templates speed this up: a 4 week mobility template in FitCoUp comes with 12 sessions, offers and trials prefilled, so a creator with a finished video library can have a sellable program the same day. Publish once the first lesson is ready.
3. Connect payments, offers and notifications
Connect your own Stripe account so payouts land directly with you; FitCoUp uses Stripe Connect and never holds your money. Set the prices on the product: monthly, 3 month, annual, lifetime or one-time can live side by side, with a free or paid trial for new students only. Turn on the renewal notice, because a surprise charge loses people at the first bill.
Then switch on the lifecycle messages. FitCoUp enables 16 retention rules with 64 templates in English and Ukrainian from day one, in-app, by email and by push. Edit the wording, keep the timing.
4. Publish your own fitness app and test the install
Before you announce anything, walk the full path on a real phone: open the quiz, buy with a test card, install the PWA, complete a session, check that the streak and the first milestone appear, then cancel from the account screen. Fix whatever feels slow, then ask five people from your audience to do the same and send a screen recording.
If you are moving an existing catalog, import students by CSV with email, name, program and end date so nobody loses access on launch day.
Timeline: how long it takes to make your own fitness app
With videos ready and a template, a school can be live the same day. For a creator moving a full catalog, a week is the honest estimate: for example two days for upload and structure, a day for branding and offers, a day for message copy, and the rest for testing and import. Native store apps add weeks on any platform, so most creators launch on the PWA first and add store listings once the numbers justify them.
