Glossary: OTO

One time offer (OTO): definition and how it works for creators

In short

A one time offer (OTO) is a single additional offer shown to a buyer once, right after a purchase, usually on the thank you page, and accepted in one click with the card just used. For a fitness creator the OTO is typically the next program, the annual plan or an add-on at a price that is not available anywhere else, shown for a limited time and never shown again to that buyer.

The moment after a purchase is the moment of highest trust: the buyer has decided, the card is on file and the next step is open. A one time offer (OTO) uses that moment for one related offer. Done well, it raises the average order and gives the buyer something useful at a price they will not see again. Done badly, it feels like a trap. This entry defines the term, shows how an OTO works for a program or a membership sale and lists the rules that keep it fair.

One offer, once

Shown a single time per order, hidden from buyers who already own the product.

One click, same card

Accepted with the card just used; 3D Secure runs on the page when the bank asks for it.

A real timer

The countdown is kept on the server, from 5 minutes to 24 hours, so a page refresh changes nothing.

In every FitCoUp plan

One OTO per offer on the thank you page template; Enterprise adds a downsell after a decline.

Definition of a one time offer

A one time offer is an offer that exists only in one place and one moment: after a specific purchase, for a limited time, at conditions not available in the regular catalog. The three properties that make it an OTO rather than a normal upsell are the single exposure (shown once per order), the single click (the payment method is already on file) and the deadline (a timer that ends the offer). A downsell is the smaller offer shown when the OTO is declined.

How an OTO works for a program or membership sale

A student buys an 8 week program for a one-time price. On the thank you page they see one offer: the membership with the first month discounted, or the next level program, or a nutrition add-on. The offer names the price, the deadline and what it includes, with a button that charges the card just used. In FitCoUp the thank you page comes from a template with one OTO per offer, the charge runs with 3D Secure on the page when required, the timer is kept on the server between 5 minutes and 24 hours, and the offer is hidden from buyers who already own the product. On Enterprise and Agency a declined OTO can be followed by a downsell and the thank you page can redirect to your own URL.

  • Entry program purchased. OTO is the membership with the purchase counted toward the first month.
  • Monthly membership purchased. OTO is the annual plan at the annual discount.
  • Program finished and the next level purchased. OTO is a bundle or an add-on.
  • Any purchase. OTO can be a nutrition product or a bonus module on Pro and above.

Rules that keep an OTO fair

An OTO that works long term respects the buyer. The timer is real and kept on the server, so no refresh resets it and no fake scarcity is involved. The offer is shown once per order and never to someone who already owns the product. The price and what is included are stated in full, the charge uses 3D Secure when the bank asks for it, and the receipt shows the OTO as a separate line. The buyer can decline with one click and nothing else changes about the purchase they just made.

OTO, upsell, order bump and downsell

An order bump is a small add-on offered at checkout before payment, with a checkbox. An OTO is shown after payment, once, with a timer. An upsell funnel is a sequence of offers sent over days or weeks by email, push and in-app based on behavior, for example after three sessions in the first week. A downsell is the smaller offer after a declined OTO. FitCoUp has order bumps on Pro and above, one OTO per offer in every plan, upsell funnels in every plan and the downsell on Enterprise and Agency.

Measuring the OTO

Two numbers: the acceptance rate (orders with the OTO accepted divided by orders where it was shown) and the revenue it added. In FitCoUp the Revenue from mechanics card attributes revenue to the OTO, next to the upsell funnels and checkout recovery, so you can see whether the offer, the price or the timer should change. Test one variable at a time, for example the membership with a discounted first month against the annual plan.

Questions

Is an OTO the same as an upsell?

An OTO is one kind of upsell: a single offer shown once after purchase with a timer and one-click acceptance. Upsell funnels are sequences sent over time based on behavior.

Does the buyer enter the card again?

No. The OTO charges the card just used; 3D Secure runs on the page when the bank requires it.

Can the buyer see the OTO later?

No. It is shown once per order and the timer is kept on the server. That is what makes it a one time offer.

Which FitCoUp plans include the OTO?

Every plan has the thank you page template with one OTO per offer. Enterprise and Agency add the downsell after a decline and a redirect to your own thank you URL.

What should a fitness creator offer as an OTO?

The next logical step: the membership after an entry program, the annual plan after a monthly purchase, the next level or a nutrition add-on.
